Rowan leaned on the doorway while I pressed my fingerprint to the entry scanner to our room. Based on the faint scents of our Omega and Alpha, they hadn’t yet returned from wherever our Alpha had taken her.

“I bet he wanted to show her the Midnight Fae realm,” Rowan suggested, having supplied dumb guesses all day as to their whereabouts. “Have you ever seen an Alpha out in broad daylight? They can’t stand the sun. If they went anywhere this time of day that isn’t her Nest, he probably took her to his old stomping grounds to show her off to the bloodsuckers.”

I chuckled, opening the door to our room. Rowan followed me inside as we placed our books on the counter.

A day of Beta classes was not how I’d imagined today’s events. I’d had a full itinerary planned that involved being between my Omega’s legs.

“He also literally starved himself to death so he could leave the Midnight Fae life behind,” I reminded Rowan. “Just because he’s not used to our sun doesn’t mean he can’t go outside.”

Rowan grunted, not convinced, then straightened. “What’s that?” he asked just as I noticed the large pile of shopping bags gathered around Seifiek’s throne.

I knew better than to touch anything that belonged to my Alpha, but this was a good sign.

“He took her… shopping?” Rowan asked incredulously. It wasn’t the first time a Beta had dropped off our Alpha’s deliveries; we had a few servants and couriers assigned to our mate-circle because of Seifiek’s good standing, but the floral shopping bags were definitely not his style.

“Seems that way,” I said with a sense of disdain.

Rowan and I had been working on a gift for our Omega ever since we’d been given our limited freedoms. We knew she’d be captured, but the future wasn’t written in stone, not yet.

She would need to walk the Web in places no Fae had ever gone before, and for that, she would need us.

Contemplating how our Alpha would react to the gift that would reveal more of Rowan and Zeke than I intended to ever share with him, I began preparations for tonight’s meal.

Cooking soothed me, and right now, I was stressed the fuck out, even if I wouldn’t admit that to Rowan.

Still, he sensed my mood and massaged my shoulders while I worked, his abnormal warmth working in my favor to unwind the knots in my shoulders.

“This is a good sign, right?” he asked, kneading his fingers into my muscles as he spoke.

I sighed and focused on chopping up silver root, a popular ingredient for stir fry dishes in the region where Gina would have grown up based on what I knew of her. “Don’t you think he’s being too… nice?” After everything we’d been through, this was the moment I was supposed to be afraid of. Our Alpha capturing us had been just as bad as I had imagined. He’d left us to be broken by his Second, and that experience had almost killed us both. It was for Gina’s sake that we had survived.
